Plastic Baby Bottles Could Hurt Your Child

December 2, 2007 | Written by: Connie Brooks

BPA Free Baby BottlesBisphenol A (BPA) is a common ingredient in many plastics (including baby bottles!) It has been found to cause adverse human health effects.

  • Abnormal development of reproductive organs.
  • Predisposition to cancer.
  • Mimics the female hormone estrogen.
  • Decreases fertility later in life.
  • Causes reproductive and behavioral problems when a fetus is exposed in the womb.
  • Causes abnormal, possibly precancerous changes to the uterus, mammary tissue & prostate.

There is much governmental, and big business finger pointing, and backsliding going on right now. The gist of it is, though, that numerous independent studies have found that B.P.A is B.A.D.

My recommendation? Use glass baby bottles! Not only are they BPA free, they are cheaper than the name brand ones I WAS feeding my child with.

I ordered mine from Amazon.com (The bottles are $4.99 with free shipping) got them fast, and have had no trouble since.

Be aware though, if you do make the change, you may want to stick with the nipples your child is already used to. The rubber ones that came with the bottle did not flow fast enough for my daughter. The bottles fit a standard size nipple (not the wide mouth kind.)

If you would like more information on BPA you can visit this site, this site, or this site.

There are also some who claim that all this BPA hype is bull. For that info, check out this site.

I would like to know which baby bottles are being recall, because I don’t want anything hurting my baby. Please let me know what kind.

        Thank you,

        Mrs. Padilla

          Mrs. Padilla,

Thanks for your comment, and welcome to Thrifty Mamas!

To the best of my knowledge as of December 2007, there are no current baby bottle recalls.

I follow the product recalls religiously and do my best to post the alerts as they happen. If you want to do the same, you can check out this site.

As far as the baby bottles being unsafe, it is my personal feeling that all forms of plastic bottles are unsafe, BPA free or not. Especially if you heat them in the microwave. After doing the research on BPA, I switched my daughter to glass.

However, if you want to stick with plastic, you can view a list of BPA Free plastic baby bottles here.

Or you can check out the Glass Baby Bottles at Amazon, which are actually cheaper and easier to sanitize.

I hope this answers your question!

          Thanks,
          Connie
